HEALTH SCREENINGS

Health screening programs are available in the areas of vision, hearing, dental and scoliosis.

Vision and hearing screenings are required for students being evaluated for special education. Additionally, hearing and vision screenings for students are available upon request with parental/guardian consent.

The Alabama Eye Screening Program is implemented through the Alabama Department of Education for all Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grade students. This is an “opt out program” with all students screened unless a parent/guardian returns the pre-screening form indicating the student should not be screened.

Dental screenings are offered annually to 1st and 3rd grade students. The screening will be performed by a volunteer dentist. Parent/guardian permission is required for the dental screening. Information will be sent home by the students prior to screenings.

Scoliosis screenings are offered annually to all Alabama public school students in grades 5 -9 (ages 11-14). This is  an “opt-in program”. Parents/guardians will be notified in advance and permission forms will be sent home by the students.  The purpose of the scoliosis screening is to detect the signs of abnormal curves of the spine at their earliest stages so that the need for treatment can be determined. Many cases of curvature of the spine are mild and require only ongoing observation by a physician when they are first diagnosed. Others can worsen with time as the child grows and require active treatment such as bracing and surgery. Early treatment can prevent the development of a severe deformity which can affect a person's appearance and health. The school nurse will be responsible for follow-up with parents on all students referred with possible scoliosis.
